Are you a nature lover? Do the arts fill your soul? Does community lift your spirits? All come together at Molly's Muse.
Molly's Muses: community, arts, and nature. All three entities magically morph in this hidden gem we call Molly's Muse. A very private spot on a very private island in a very private bay, with the most spectacular view on the lake: a panoramic view into Redstone Lake. This special spot features three unique dwellings: a hand hewn log cabin (the artsy hub of the compound); an unparalleled storybook cottage (the bunkie); and the quiet lakeside writer's shack (a meditative sanctuary). Combined, they create a retreat, an artist's studio space, a sanctuary, a girlfriends' getaway, a family compound, an art installation, or currently: a handy COVID destination with vast options for social distancing... the possibilities are endless. The stories of this land are colourful, the vision of the original owner is evident, and the love that has been bestowed on bringing this unique haven back to life is palpable. Rumour has it that the island is often inhabited by Molly and her crew (local pirates dedicated to improving the environment, recycling used materials, and often leaving treasure behind: a.k.a. chocolate). Molly is dedicated to restoring, reusing, reimagining history, herstory and local narratives. The result: Molly's Muse: the confluence of community, arts and nature. A magical oasis hidden within a rustic setting on a secluded island in a private bay in pristine Little Redstone Lake.
In the spirit of "threes", there are three unique buildings on this special 4.5 acre piece of land, with 1400 feet of shoreline facing three directions. The largest abode, the one we call Molly's "Log Cabin", is a perfect gathering place for your community - a hand-hewn and previously loved log cabin, loved yet again with a new passion and restored with a colourful eye to the arts: vintage stained glass (guarding secrets of the original carpenter's family tree), original pieces of art, childhood murals (reflecting literature, heroines, heroes, nature, and play), costumes and hats (fueling theatre of the imagination), studio space (with a huge window offering natural light above an oversized harvest table for painting, sketching, crafts); desks tucked away in corners (for the poets, playwrights and novelists among us); logs and branches woven into the soaring and unique architectural construction of this storied and ambitiously crafted Scandinavian style log cabin. There's also an outdoor "painting and crafts table", with a view down the lake: through the narrows and into Big Redstone. And, of course, pockets for slumber... a luxurious wrought iron king bed with memory foam mattress, in the main floor bedroom, boasting double doors that open onto a view of the lake. And a single bed upstairs, crafted from branches, in a wondrous environment of dreams and fantasies...with access to an extra single mattress or air mattress as needed. And of course a fully functioning kitchen with all you need for basic culinary crafts... to accompany the appetite that comes with living and breathing nature from dawn to dusk.
The second building on this property was the first to be built, again with hand-cut logs dragged across the ice in winter from nearby mainland trees. Restored to its' original splendor, it is a humble and charming storybook cottage in the woods. We call it "The Bunkie". A second gathering place, this cozy and, dare we say, beautiful structure holds a table/desk, a couch that converts easily to a double bed, and a loft with an additional double bed. A perfect second sleeping area, game playing area, or quiet studio. The rocking chair on the porch may prompt the telling of fairy tales, or inspire TV screenwriters as they ponder the appeal of the successful series "The Waltons". Sleeps two easily. More if collaborating :)
The third sweet abode on Molly's Muse, formerly a neglected tool shed overlooking the lake, has been creatively reimagined as the "Writer's Shack": complete with the current owner's grandparents' baker's table: now a desk supporting the character development and plot twists that percolate with the gentle ripples on the lake, easily tracked through the window or sliding door to the sweet porch and rocking chair. A kettle, tea pot, and tea are the perfect companions for the serious lakeside writer.
Outdoors there are, of course, the wondrous options in nature: birds, fish, chipmunks, squirrels, occasional deer, beavers, abundant trees, wildflowers, raspberries, wild oregano, grasses, sky, clouds, water, water, and water... Thus, many water activities. You have your choice of a well loved canoe, a single kayak, and may borrow (not rent) a handy motorized fishing boat for transportation to and from the boat launch (and parking lot) in Redstone Lake - a ten minute (and incredibly picturesque) ride from Molly's Muse. There are a number of paddling routes within Little Redstone, through to Big Redstone, and through the hauntingly beautiful Pelaw River, under a bridge, which leads you into the lake and hiking/biking system of the Haliburton Forest Reserve (day passes available online). Remember that swimming is allowed: in fact, it's recommended. This water is clear, clean, pristine... Claim your spot. Ladder off the dock? A pebbly beach to the west of the dock? A hidden rock plateau under a shoreline tree? Explore and enjoy...
Sticking closer to Molly's main hub, you may want to avail yourself of the popular "yoga deck": for meditation, socialization, or a dip into "downward dog"... a multi functional platform with an incredible view down the lake into Big Redstone: one of the best views found on the lake. Yoga mats available, as are Muskoka chairs for those who prefer tree watching to "tree pose".
For those of you who are seasoned campers, you will appreciate our "second bathroom": a recently crafted outhouse: just past The Bunkie. Thanks to carpenters Brian and Don, this brand new high end outhouse offers a well ventilated, breezy and fresh environment: featuring a unique screen door, complete with ambient squeak. Bring a book; you won't want to leave.
Dine indoors or settle into our "outdoor dining area": surrounded by trees - a handy outdoor gathering place: perfect for sharing stories and laughter. At night time, the generous outdoor firepit hosts log benches and a view of the stars. This is far preferable to the former fireplace in the cabin: NOT a functioning fireplace any more. So breathe in the fresh air of the great outdoors while warming your tootsies.
On the south side of the island, the main dock affords a fair amount of privacy in a secluded bay. For reading, sunbathing, swimming... whatever fills your spirit...
This distinctive piece of land for which we care is, today, more unique than ever. The three separate buildings offer built-in social distancing opportunities, with options for outdoor meals and socially distanced gatherings at a number of outdoor locations: all on your own little piece of Little Red. We ask that you treat our second home and our cottage neighbors with care and respect, remaining mindful of noise levels; we trust they will do the same for you.
Community, arts, nature... a perfect trifecta to fill the spirit. Its' temple: Molly's Muse. Imperfect, yet perfect in its imperfection.
P.S. We are also fortunate in our family to occupy our beloved Hawkes' Nest on the mainland (see our second Redstone Rental listing): an ideal family cottage: chock a block with activities for all ages, shallow entry for swimming, a lawn for outdoor sports, basketball court and more - just a stone's throw from Molly's Muse. If you are looking for "social distancing" options for extended family or friends, you might want to consider a combination of Hawkes' Nest and Molly's Muse: a three minute boat ride from each other, and a creative opportunity for this uniquely challenging time in our world. Wherever you land, we wish you a safe and healthy summer, filled with meaningful moments with loved ones.
A fishing boat (motorized tin boat) and motor may be borrowed (not rented) for the use of all guests at Molly's Muse. A waiver must be signed in order to do so, and a copy of a valid boater's license MUST be provided. Use of the owner's boat is on a "use at your own risk" basis. Life jackets are not provided but are required by law, so guests must provide their own. Any life jackets found on the property belong to the owner and should guests elect to use them, it is on a "use at your own risk" basis. Please indicate on the rental form in the comment section if you would like the use of the tin fishing boat.
